About
I came across an advertisement in a blog just by chance regarding the Alaska Project and something inside me like water about to boil said, “YOU HAVE TO DO THIS!”
A little about myself:
I am a native of upstate New York. I grew up on a dairy farm and spent much of my free time back-packing and camping in the Adirondacks.
I don’t why but I’ve always been drawn to adverse and challenging weather. As a young boy, during thunderstorms I would run out into the woods with nothing more than a sheet of plastic or a piece of carpet and find a way to beat back the storm and build a shelter. I remember summers where I slept outside every night. My mother was a single parent with 5 kids and I roamed the countryside like Huckleberry Finn. I especially loved snow cave camping in the winter. The more adverse the weather the more I enjoyed it.
My mother remarried and my step-father kicked my butt in gear. I worked my tail off through school and college participating in athletics (basketball, track, lacrosse, tennis, cross-country, etc..) advanced placement courses, theater, you name it—I did it. I even spent a summer acting in LA. My family moved to Cairo, Egypt for a number of years and I had the opportunity to explore the culture and landscape of that region… a lot of great adventures. I graduated in business and learned the Japanese language. I speak read and write fluent Japanese. I lived 5 of the last 10 years in Japan and the rest were spent traveling back and forth. Up until a year-and-a-half ago I was spending 2 weeks in Tokyo and 2 in the US each month. I lived in permanent jet-lag. All I did was work.
At that point I met my wife and decided to stay state-side for a while and I started a small Emergency Preparedness company called The Ready Project. We manufacture ready-made long term shelf life meals that we distribute via Sam’s club, associated food stores, etc with many additional Emergency Preparedness, Extreme Weather Gear & Disaster Relief product lines on the horizon.
Yet my life remains behind a desk.
When I saw and read the advertisement for the Alaska Project something inside me sparked. I get excited by the challenges of self reliance, surviving in adverse conditions, and living off the land. I am excited about this unique opportunity to challenge myself. I know it’s in me. I just need to get there. I feel like this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn something about myself and the world that we live in. It can only happen “adventuring” away from the computer screen.
I am extremely resourceful, a quick study, and I take a level headed approach to problem solving. I find myself naturally taking the lead at work and socially; however, when I recognize a leader I know when to co-operate, follow, and how to support the efforts of a team. I’ve lived through some painful experiences: physical, mental, and emotional and when times get tough I dig deep, turn my face into the wind and step forward.
I really don't know how this whole thing works. Hopefully I'll get a few votes and the casting directors will consider me for what I consider a once in a life time opportunity. Get me away from this desk and into the snow!
