About
A hopeless cause, an attempt to go back, a message to the world that few will ever understand. A refusal to conform, a chance to be different, only to be remembered as monsters. You will never understand… for when you do, we change the meaning. A twisted joke that is no longer funny and maybe never was. Still we laugh…we create the rules and we make the path. First review of LIES!

The question that always revolves around a band putting out their sophomore album is whether or not the new release will be as good or better than its predecessor. Fair or unfair, one is almost always judged on proven past performance; therefore, failure is doubly glaring if one has been stellar. In the case of Hot Buttered Anal, I felt a mixture of trepidation and excitement the moment I began unwrapping their new release, 'lies.' Would they still be quirky satirical punky and fun? Would the music still be fast and uncompromising Metal with hints of modernity and 80's Thrash sensibility? Would the music still have the sleazy feel of a jizz swabber at a 24 hour porn store? Would killer acoustic jams still be present? Goddamn it, I felt a sense of fear opening 'lies' akin in similarity to a teenager hoping not to premature ejaculate into a prom queens mouth just as she goes in for a suck… Fuck, if I was stupid enough to believe in that impostor Jesus, I would have said a silent prayer.

After placing 'lies' into my CD player with shaking hands I was overwhelmed with a sense of joyous relief that slowly unfurled itself into sublimity with each track spinning into my ears. 'Lies' is not only an exceptional album, it is better than Hot Buttered Anal's previous LP, 'Please Kill Me.' When the band plays fast they are nearly as infectious and speedy as Macabre. When they play slower, the music is infused with a sense of insurrectionary hostility and darkness. Whether or not this is a derivative of the current state of our economy, foreign policies, mundane life existence, misanthropy, nihilism, or general malaise at life, the band has found a way to mash their diverse emotions into 'lies.' Each fast or mid paced song explodes in the mind like a snort of cocaine raping the brain of dopamine. Riffage snarls and slithers with sidewinder anger, drums rise and plummet in torrents of acidic sewage rain, bass lumbers like a crowbar pounding a sternum in unceasing hatred, and the vocals are insanely riotous. Militant clawed throat gags yelp harsh lines. The intonation floats between open hostility and sarcasm like the repressed insanity of a mass murderer mumbling and ranting before snapping in Disney Land with loaded guns.

What makes Hot Buttered Anal especially killer is how they are multidimensional. Songs have moments of funk riffage; Thrash terror, 80's Orange County Punk, 80's Hardcore, and an uninhibited sense of boisterous joy that belies the openly misanthropic lyrics. Listening to Hot Buttered Anal is like watching Married With Children, George Carlin, and Dirty Harry at once while playing Bob Dylan, old Slayer, Macabre, and early Motley Crue during an acid trip. Especially killer are the acoustic tracks. Musically and vocally songs like "Duct tape and sausages," "Everything sucks," and "Once upon a time" sound almost happy or even similar to an 80's Glam Rock ballad. Yet, the lyrics are hate filled barbs wrought with nihilistic passages. Most exceptional is that fans can empathetically relate to the lyrics and music or can use tracks like "Once upon a time" as an inspirational anthem for that homicidal day they strike on society. Either way, fans will be singing along to the lyrics.

'Lies' is an LP encompassing a myriad of ideas without being confusing or superfluous. The music has groove, a raunchy attitude, hilarious moments, and a morose sense of depravity oozing from both lyrics and music. Songs are happy and grim, but nothing about the bands attitude or approach seems forced. The result is a smooth sounding record with a polished nihilism in production. Most gratifying is that Hot Buttered Anal has found a method for creating music that is simply fun to hear without being too heavy, too technical, too brutal, or pretentiously macho. If you're looking for creative Metal full of deranged attitude and overdriven entertainment matched only by sheer heaviness then you'll dig 'lies' by Hot Buttered Anal!
