Seeking—
Ezra Mannon: 50s, general of the Union army, was a judge and mayor of a New England seaport town before the Civil War, statuesque, severe, a model of rectitude, devoted husband and father, struggles to show affection;

Christine Mannon: 40s, Ezra’s wife, an exotic, sensual beauty out of place in this Puritan world, cunning, manipulative, hungry, stifled in her passionless marriage and will go to any length to find a way out;

Lavinia Mannon: late 20s, daughter of Ezra and Christine, angular, with a stiff military bearing like her father’s, willful, righteous, detests her mother, but is fiercely protective of her father and brother;

Orin Mannon: 20s, worn, son of Ezra and Christine, suffered a head wound as a lieutenant in the infantry, boyish, impulsive, slouching, awkward, moody;

Adam Brandt: 40s, captain of the “Flying Trades” merchant ship, hardworking, has a seething resentment toward the Mannons, has a steadied carelessness, more emotional and romantic than your average ship’s captain;

Peter Niles: 20s, long-time friend of the Mannons, good-natured, straightforward, courting Lavinia, artillery captain in the Union army;

Hazel Niles: late teens-early 20s, a long time friend of the Mannons, sweet, trusting, innocent, but will speak her mind if pushed, in love with Orin;

Seth Beckwith: 70s, gardener of the Mannon estate for many years, allied with Lavinia, his favorite, relaxed, earthy, enjoys his gossip and his fun, proud of his work, reverent toward the Mannons, once had a good baritone voice. Performers in the following roles will play more than one of these characters; tracks TBD

Amos Ames: 50s, carpenter, gossip-monger, but without malicious intent;

Louisa: 50s, Ames’s wife, similar, but with more malice;

Minnie: 40s, Louisa’s cousin, plump, eager, meek, “listener type,” fascinated by the exclusivity and wealth of the Mannons;

Josiah Borden: 60s, manager of the Mannon shipping company, shrewd, competent;

Emma Borden: 50s, wife of Josiah, defensively sharp and assertive;

Everett Hills, D.D: 50s, well-fed minister of a prosperous congregation, stout, snobbish, yet timid;

Dr. Joseph Blake: 60s, self-important, physician to prosperous families, defender of the Mannon family;

The Chantyman: 60s, weather-beaten and drunken, but somehow has a romantic, troubadour-of-the-sea quality;

Ira Mackle: 60s, drunk and daring, but his courage comes from the bottle;

Joe Silva: 60s, Portuguese, fishing captain, boisterous and drunk;

Abner Small: 60s, clerk in a hardware store, enjoys drunken shenanigans.
