Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

Cabrillo Music Theatre & Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza are casting the West Coast premiere of Breaking Up Is Hard to Do, a "jukebox" book musical, built around the songs of Neil Sedaka. Taking place in a Catskills resort, circa 1960, it weaves a tale of love and laughter with classic Neil Sedaka hits such as "Calendar Girl," "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Where The Boys Are," and the title tune. Lewis Wilkenfeld, artistic dir. (attending); Troy Magino, dir./choreo. (attending); Lloyd Cooper, music dir. Rehearsals start Dec. 15. Performances run Jan. 9-18, 2009 (nine-10 perfs.).
Seeking—Marge Gelman: 20-30s, all types considered; abandoned at the altar, an aspiring dentist from Brooklyn who finds herself in the Catskills on what would have been her honeymoon weekend with her best friend Lois, strong vocalist with good comedic ability, mezzo-soprano, comfortable to an E; Lois Warner: 20s-30s, all types considered, quirky girl with more heart than smarts, aspiring nightclub singer, lives her life as if in a Betty Grable movie, in trying to help her friend Marge recover from heartbreak, she inadvertently puts her in the line of fire of Del, the hotel's suave but manipulative bandleader, strong vocalist with good comedic ability, alto with some mezzo-soprano ability, comfortable to a C; Del Delmonaco: late 20s-30s, all types considered, not the sharpest knife in the drawer, headliner with charm, will do anything to get ahead including misleading Marge into thinking he loves her and stealing his cousin Gabe's songs, strong vocalist with good sense of comic timing, tenor, comfortable to an A; Gabe: mid-late 20s, all types considered, clumsy, brainy, terribly sweet, on a fast track to joining his father's orthodontia practice, lacking self-confidence, he is secretly the songwriting genius behind the music Del claims as his own, upon meeting Marge he falls head over heels, strong vocalist with a likable sensitivity, tenor, B flat to C range; Esther: mid-40s to 60s, all types considered, fiercely independent, always there with a quip or smart remark, strong but likable, owner of the hotel named after her, a survivor, since her husband's death, she has kept the hotel afloat using crafty solutions, boundless energy, and creativity to keep guests happy, alto, comfortable to a C, or at least a B flat, but really rich in low to mid-register; Harvey: 50s-60s, all types considered, resident "tummler" (comedian/social director) at Esther's Paradise, all about the punch line, spends most of his life cracking wise and avoiding any show of genuine emotion or vulnerability, good vocalist with a strong sense of comedic timing, baritone, range to an F sharp or a G; The Band: male or female, piano, bass, guitar, drums, visible onstage as the house band at Esther's Paradise Resort, sings throughout the show, must hold harmony, already-formed bands considered.
