My name is Candi and i am married with 3 sons. I am the Founder and President of Gentle Giants, Inc. we are a non profit, NO KILL giant breed dog rescue. We are a very small group with only a handful of volunteers BUT we have made great strides in saving the unwanted, abused and neglected giant breeds. Since 2006 we have placed more than 200 dogs/puppies into forever homes. I am involved with various scout groups and youth groups that volunteer their time to help the rescue..we also bring some of the dogs to meetings so that people get a first hand view of what its like to have a giant breed dog own you. I am not a vet or a vet tech (even though I probably could be with all the hands on exp I have) I am just a woman who loves animals. Our furbaby family consists of ZEUS our Great Dane, APOLLO our English Mastiff, HADES our Newfoundland, Ms. GRETZKY our beagle,BLIZZARD our blind Great Pyrenees,HERCULES,THOR,STELLA,GINO,ATLAS and EMMA the Saint Bernards..BAMBI and THUMPER 2 cats JESSE and JAMES 2 handicapped cats and OREO our rabbit. Now besides these there are always fosters for the rescue..right now we have 5 adult Great Pyrenees and 6 Pyr mix puppies. So needless to say our house is a zoo 24/7. Since we are a no kill and we specialize in senior and disabled pets..many of these do not get adopted so they will live out their lives with Gentle Giants, Inc. Our Special Needs Babies and their stories.
BLIZZARD~Blind Great Pyrenees that was dumped on a highway dying of pneumonia and emaciated. Healthy and our poster boy now.
ATLAS~Born with a club paw this Saint Bernard was dumped by his owners in a high kill shelter..He now has a prosthetic leg that he wears when we go to the vet and for walks..we also have his epilepsy under control
FELIX and OSCAR~Great Pyrenees mix brothers arrived from Y..FELIX lost his right front leg due to infection after being shot with a shotgun in KY
EMMA a senior Saint Bernard that was dumped by her "FAMILY" in a high kill shelter in GA we got her out with only a couple hours left before they put her down. She was a very sick girl and heartworm positive but she is all better and had heartworm treatment.
SNOW is a deaf Great Pyrennes pup who was hit by a car and left to die in KY we have her and her hips are healed from being fractured but she will always have trouble walking and jumping.
DIXIE~a 2.5 year old blind and deaf catahoula leopard dog/great dane mix..Dixie arrived from LA from Gypsys Blind Eye Rescue. Dixie has made quite a bit of progress since Sept 2008..she spends her days out the the crate,,her new kick is sleeping in the bathtub..she has a ton of energy and she does see some shadows withe her left eye and she will chase ghosts from time to time..Dixie is a sweetheart and she has her friends that come and take her to the park and bring her treats and handmade blankets and Christmas gifts:)
Without the help of my husband Doug (who by the way is a home improvement specialist and it comes in handy when a dog eats sheetrock or rips up linoleum)and my 3 sons Bill, Raymond and Dougie I could not have helped so very many dogs in need. They help with the care of my babies..Bill does not live home anymore but when he did he was a help.
My goal is to educate as many people as possible about the importance of spay/neuter and proper vet care, and what its like to own a giant. Being cast for this show would help me reach so many more people and hopefully help our dream come true of buying a farm and opening a no kill sanctuary.
My love for animals is never ending..I help as many as I possibly can..the unconditional love that they give is incredible.

******A DAY IN OUR LIFE******  
Here is a typical day at our home...get up by 6am let all the dogs out, clean up after puppies..give everyone water and feed puppies and nursing mamas..let everyone out again..throw a load of doggie blankets in washer...outside to pick up the morning piles..play with the dogs before leaving for work..Go to Thrift N Gift to raise money for rescue...leave store and let out dogs that are being cared for while people are away..back home let out the crew..clean up after puppies..make sure everyone has water..clean up the afternoon piles..More laundry, dishes, etc all dog related...get out the shop vac and vacuum up all the hair. Start to prepare dinner for the dogs, make sure everyone gets their supplements, meds, etc. Let them all out, clean up after puppies,make sure nobody runs around after eating..the reason for this is so they dont bloat. Play with them after quiet time. Do household stuff for the humans in the home. Let dogs out for final time. Nightly yard pile pick up time and lime yard. Dogs are done for the night, the cats and rabbit are fed.. Now that it is nighttime do all the people laundry, etc. Get things prepared for the next morning...fall into bed exhausted..get up next day and do it all again. Its alot of work but worth every minute. 
 
*****THE HAPPINESS AND THE HEARTBREAK***** 
 
There is no greater feeling in rescue than when you get to save an animal who has been dumped in a high kill shelter because they are too old, too sick too big,too much work, etc. Or when you have an owner turn them in because they are no longer wanted. Once you meet these poor souls and they wag their tails and lick your face you know that you are doing the greatest thing possible..giving them a second chance to find love and a forever home. Most of our rescues find that happy ending either in their new forever home or if a home cannot be found they live out their life with Gentle Giants, Inc. with love and comfort. 
 
Some never get the chance due to illness or extreme starvation and other horrendous circumstances...but none of them die alone.....that is the heart break of rescue..imagine having a 6 week old puppy that was fighting a week long battle for his life..take his last breath in your arms...or finding a puppy dead from a weak heart when you wake up in the morning...holding an elderly Saint Bernard that can no longer get up, stand, walk or eat and knowing that you did everything possible to make his senior years the best of his life..you feel the life drain out of him as you hold him with tears streaming down your face so heavy that you cant even see...but the next call or email you receive of a dog in need you jump in with both feet...knowing that sometimes the endings are not happy.
