Acting isn’t just an interest or a hobby but a passion. To make a place for yourself in the industry, it is vital that you are not only hardworking and dedicated but also passionate. The passion for acting is essential to bring about the heat to whatever role, big or small; you are playing.

The film industry is massive. Although there are numerous roles which one can opt for in order to become a part of the industry, if you dream of becoming an actor, your journey won’t be very smooth. Landing yourself a role is not a piece of cake. With the ever-increasing competition and never-ending queues of aspiring artists outside the offices of casting agents, you may feel that making a place for yourself in Hollywood is next to impossible.

One tip that you should always follow is – try your luck in Hollywood only if you are passionate. If you lack the passion, you will stand nowhere in competition with individuals who could spend their lives struggling with the hope that they will get a break one day!

If you are someone who just discovered their love for acting and dream of becoming an actor in Hollywood, you must be wondering where to start. As we said, it is not an easy journey, but at the end of the day, the struggle never goes to waste, and you are sure to get the fruit at one point in your life.

Talent Agencies

If you are new to the industry, feeling lost is normal. However, associating yourself with a talent agency is one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself. A talent agency is an agency that helps a newbie in finding relevant jobs and roles. Talent agencies assist young and aspiring individuals to launch their careers in Hollywood. They have a widespread network in the industry and have contacts with renowned figures from Hollywood, and therefore, they know where an actor is needed and what type of actor is needed.

Talent agencies are contacted by the casting directors. They inform the talent agencies what the requirements of the role are. The talent agency conducts auditions and shortlists the most suited candidates for the role. Once the process of filtration is complete, the talent agent recommends the potential candidates to the casting director who then makes the final decision.

The talent agencies ask you to sign a contract according to which a stated percentage of your earnings go to the casting agent.

Talent Agencies vs. Casting Networks

It is okay for a newcomer to be confused between talent agencies and casting agencies. While talent agencies are directly associated with the talent, casting agencies are directly associated with a specific project. While talent agencies are responsible to prepare a pool of potential candidates that they recommend to casting agencies when asked, a casting agency is linked to a particular project and is hired to get the job of casting the best actors done.

If you are new, you are most likely to be on the panel of a talent agency rather than a casting agency. It is the talent agency that will represent you before the casting agency.

Stepping Into Hollywood

The first step towards Hollywood involves making an association with a reputable talent agency. The better the talent agency, the higher are the chances that bigger casting networks are their clients. The casting agency is more like a middleman. The producers, directors, and the entire film crew is on one side, and the potential actors and talent agencies are on the other with casting agencies serving the purpose of the bridge between the sides. Once you succeed in becoming a part of a casting agency, you are good to go from that point onwards.

Best Casting Networks of Hollywood

The casting agency takes up the responsibility to train you and help you form a liaison with the directors and producers. If you wish to make a place for yourself in Hollywood, your target should be to get on the panel of the best casting agency so that you can kick-start your acting career and have a clearer vision of where you see things going.

Central Casting

Central casting is one of the leading casting agencies of the United States of America. With its offices based in 6 varied locations, the company specializes in background casting. The term background casting refers to casting for actors who are willing to play a nonspeaking role. Even though these actors are not assigned mainstream parts, they play a very impacting role in the completion of a film’s story. Without them, it is impossible to bring life to a movie. One example of a background role would be the part of Allie’s Maid in the latter part of the movie The Notebook (2004). The storyline required someone to play this part and whoever cast directed Kweli Leaphart into the role of a caretaker did a magnificent job.

Given the information about Central Casting specialty, one might not expect the level of stardom achieved by some of its casting directed actors. These actors showed remarkable acting skills and landed mainstream roles in Hollywood movies as well. Thus Central Casting rightfully prides itself on having a hand in the making of stars such as Kelly Clarkson, Gerard Butler, Brad Pitt and Will Farell to name a few.

The central casting was established in 1925 and is a unit of the famous production workforce provider Entertainment Partner. The company to date has worked with an extensive team of dedicated casting directors and casting associates. Central Casting’s Los Angeles office alone has over 50 employees. This shows the magnanimous level of operations the casting agency has.

Each of Central Casting offices has its own addresses and contact numbers. However, the web address is the same for all. The company posts open calls for auditions in its ‘Jobs’ section and list its vacancies under the ‘careers’ section.

Some of the Central Casting’s most prestigious credits would be Avengers: Infinity Wars (2018), Annabelle Comes Home (2019), Brooklyn Nine-Nine an NBS Most wanted TV series (2013- Still Running), Young Sheldon a CBS Network Series (2017- Still Running), Orange is the new black a Netflix Original Series (2013-2019), and Disney’s Raven’s Home (2017- Still running).

Success does not come overnight. It takes lots of hard work, dedication, commitment, and passion to get celebrities to the point where they are. Even though there are a million tips and ways to find your way into the land of dreams called Hollywood, here are a few practical tips to help you secure your dream role.

Take Acting Classes

To become a big-screen star, you need to start somewhere at the ground. You will have to build your career from scratch and for this purpose, you must get yourself enrolled in acting classes.

Acting, just like any other profession, is not something which might come to you naturally when you walk into the doors of the auditioning room. Just like a good doctor is well educated and practiced, and good sports teams keep practicing until their big day arrives. Similarly, you also need to sharpen your saw so that when the right time comes, you are actually able to feel and communicate the lines handed over to you on a piece of paper.

The person that you are pretending to be in a pretentious situation at hand which isn’t really happening in your life at the moment, you need to be good at delivering persona before casting directors and talent managers. A simple example to highlight the point would be, suppose you come from a very humble background and you are asked to act like a gangster and deliver strong language. How will you put yourself in his shoes and feel what he is feeling and express it not just through your tongue but body language as well? This requires practice and practice will make you perfect. Take as many acting classes as you can so that at the end of the day you are able to convince the talent agencies and casting directors of your acting abilities.

Participate in Art Theater or Plays

Whether at your school, college or any other place you have access to, start taking part in plays and theatrical performances. This will help you gain the acting experience and overcome stage fright. Additionally, it will also boost your confidence and you will be able to deliver and perform in front of a lot of people.

Take Your First Head Shots

Have you ever heard the term headshots? Head Shots are simply your front pose pictures of size 8 in x 10 in. Try not to make fake poses and keep touching your face with your hands. Do not rest your fingers or palms or hands anywhere else. Just try to take a normal headshot with you delivering good energetic vibes.

Prepare Your Resume

Now is the time to start preparing your resume. First of all, write down your height, weight, hair color, eye color, and age range. After that make a separate heading of your experiences and start listing the name of plays you have participated in, the person who directed them, name of the character you play and at which theater these plays were enacted.

Underneath this, you may write down your training and classes you have been taking continuously. Write down the name of the teacher, institute and the course you took. Ideally, a 2 year time spent in learning acting and practically taking part in plays and theaters will polish your skills to the right level. Once done with that include a column about special skills. This section highlight any additional skill you have, be it related to spots or singing or dancing or anything. If you can rap or speak in different accents and dialects, then write them down.

Remember-do not lie on your resume. Consider a situation where the casting director asks you to audition for a gun shooting scene since you mentioned it on your resume, but basically, you were lying. So, when the time comes, and you go point-blank, people will throw you out of the studio and they will never trust you again.

Get Into a Filmmaking or Acting School

By this time, you must have gained some experience related to acting thorough your acting classes, but in order to be really well versed at the art of acting, you must get yourself enrolled in an acting school or a film making project.

This will help you gain the required experience and get familiar with the industry language, crafts, processes, and shooting procedures. This will further polish your skills and make you even more confident at your craft. It will also make you understand how in real life, actors need to catch up with the director’s instruction. So heed our advice and sign up for acting roles if they come up and practice monologues in your school.

Keep An Eye for Short Films Opportunities

Read magazines and newspapers, go online and keep an eye for short films auditions. If you find any then send them over your resume and the headshot. By now we expect that you must have been updating your resume with each skill you gained.

In the next step you might be asked to provide a demo reel or may be asked to come over for a practical audition.

Prepare the Demo Reel

At this point, you must shoot 2-minute reel of your various clips or snippets in which you are acting out a certain part of delivering dialogues. This demo reel will help you impress the talent managers and casting directors.

Sign Yourself Up with a Talent Agency

In this step, you need to reach out to talent agents and managers in your vicinity and get yourself signed up with them. Even if they help you land in smaller roles or short films or commercials, take each opportunity as it comes and give it your best shot. Remember, even the talent mangers cannot help you if you have not completed the above-mentioned steps.

Keep Networking

Last but not least, establish and maintain good connections with talent agencies and casting companies, your friends in film making schools or people you meet along with the industry. You don’t really have to be a close friend to them. Just keep your connection strong because nothing else helps people as much in getting noticed by the big fishes in the Hollywood industry than networking itself.

Getting into Hollywood does not come easy but with the right guidance, the right choices, and the right approach, there is no stopping you.
